菩提達磨によれば、禅とは
According to Bodhidharma,
Zen is:
経典以外に別に伝えられるものであり（教外別伝）
a special transmission outside the scripture,
言葉や文字に頼らず（不立文字）
not based on words or letters,
人の心を直接に指し示して（直指人心）
a direct pointing to the heart of reality
自己の本性を徹見して、覚者になる（見性成仏）
so that we might see into our own nature and wake up.
