An Introduction to Zen Buddhism

An Introduction to Zen Buddhism

Preface

The articles collected here were originally written for the New East, which was published in Japan during the 1914 War under the editorship of Mr.Robertson Scott.

The editor suggested publishing them in book-form, but I did not feel like doing so at that time.

Later, they were made the basis of the First Series of my Zen Essay (1927), which, therefore, naturally cover more or less the same ground.

Recently, the idea came to me that the old papers might be after all reprinted in book-form.

The reason is that my Zen Essays is too heavy for those who wish to have just a little preliminary knowledge of Zen.

Will not, therefore, what may be regarded as an introductory work be welcomed by some of my foreign friends?

With this in view I have gone over the entire MS., and whatever inaccuracies I have come across in regard to diction as well as the material used have been corrected.

While there are quite a few points I would like to see now expressed somewhat differently, I have left them as they stand, because their revision inevitably involves the recasting the entire context.

So long as they are not misrepresenting, they may remain as they were written.

If the book really serves as a sort of introduction to Zen Buddhism, and leads the reader up to the study of my other works, the object is attained. No claim is made here for a scholarly treatment of the subject-matter.

なほ本書の姉妹篇として ”The Manual of Zen Buddhist Monk(邦語版『禅堂の修業と生活』1934)”, “Manual of Zen Buddhism (1935)” が出ている。
The companion book, Manual of Zen Buddhism, is recommended to be used with this Introduction.

Questions and Answers
by Way of Introduction

One day when the Emperor was visiting the pagoda of Chan Giao,

Tong Duc Thanh put this riddle to him:

"The World-Honored One was already born in the palace of King Suddhodana, even before having left Tusita heaven;

he had fulfilled the vow to save all living beings, even before he left his mother's womb.

What is the meaning of this?"

The Emperor replied,

"All rivers reflect the moon in their water.

Where there is no cloud, the blue sky is seen."

A monk asked,

"Those not yet liberated need instruction.

What about those already liberated?"

The Emperor replied,

"The clouds that from at the summit of Nhac Mountain are pure white.

The waters that flow into the River Tieu are clear blue."

Another monk inquired,

"When clouds arrive, the color of the mountains becomes soft;

when the clouds depart, the grotto becomes lighter.

Why is it said that the hidden and the revealed are the same?"

The Emperor replied,

"Is there no one besides my own descendants who dares to walk blindfolded?"

A monk said,

"The Way is one-pointed.

All the enlightened beings are on the Way to the one true source.

Why do you think that only Lord Buddha can find the road?"

The Emperor replied,

"Spring rain waters all the plants equally,

and yet the flowering branches are long or short."

A monk asked,

"Each person possesses his own perfectly enlightened nature.

Why did the World-Honored One have to go into the forest to realize the Way?"

The Emperor replied,

"Because of injustice, the sword is drawn from its sheath.

medicines are taken out of their jars."

A monk said,

"No longer allowing the dust to get into one's eyes;

no longer bringing on the itch by scratching the skin:

such is my vision of the Way.

Do you think that I have got something?"

The Emperor replied,

"Water that flows down the mountain does not think that it flows down the mountain.

The cloud that leaves the valley does not think that it leaves the valley."

The monk remained silent.

The Emperor continued,

"Do not think that non-thinking itself is the Way.

Non-thinking is very far from the Way."

The monk replied,

"If it is really a question of non-thinking, how is one able to say that it is far or near?"

The Emperor said,

"The water that flows down the mountain does not think that it flows down the mountain.

The cloud that leaves the valley does not think that it leaves the valley."
